ZAP unveils Alias roadster at NADA

Yesterday at the National Automobile Dealers Association annual expo in New Orleans, ZAP unveiled their three-wheel roadster, the Alias. The Alias, shown in its running pre-production form, features upward hinging doors, seating for two, an estimated 100-mile range, 0 to 60 in 7.8 seconds, and a relatively reasonable prince point of less than $35,000. Signature Series Alias roadsters will be available this year in limited numbers, but ZAP does plan to mass-produce the Alias as well. ZAP is taking $1,000 deposits to hold an Alias, with delivery slated for late this year. Reserve one here.

Integrity Automotive Applies for ATPMIV Funds

Remember the whole Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program (ATPMIV) that was supposed to encourage automakers to develop more technologically advanced, fuel efficient vehicles? This is the same pool of money that the Detroit Three were salivating over until the government decided that failing banks and failing car companies can slurp from the same pool of taxpayer dollars (called the Troubled Assets Relief Program).

Some companies are applying to use ATPMIV funds for their original purpose. Among them, Integrity Automotive and ZAP have jointly applied for $200 million in funds to aid in the construction of a plant in Franklin, Kentucky that will produce ZAP electric vehicles. Integrity will use the plant to assemble ZAP EVs including scooters and the Xebra model, which are currently made in China. The plant, which is expected to produce 100,000 vehicles per year and employ 4,000 people when it opens for business, is estimated to cost $175 million. It should be noted that this is double the original estimate of $84 million. As a few notable Michigan executives can attest to, applying for aid and getting it are two different things. We'll have to wait and see whether the government approves Integrity's application.  Source: Green Car Congress Read More

This weekend a brand-new dealership is celebrating their grand opening in San Jose, California. Why is this news-worthy to electric car gurus? Because it's a ZAP dealership. ZAP, makers of the popular three-wheel Xebra sedan and (larger) XL Truck, plan to open a network of 50 electric vehicle dealerships across the U.S., and the first, Ethical Approach Electric Vehicle Center, will begin offering electric economy cars starting at just $11,700 MSRP.

Ethical Approach is located at 3806 Stevens Creek in San Jose. Their phone is 408-355-9940. Anyone who visits the dealership this weekend ought to ask about their "word-of-mouth" grand opening... Zap factory hits speed bump

Plans for a new ZAP electric car factory near the Kentucky-Tennessee border have hit a speed bump when the company failed to secure $125 million in bond funding. GE Capital met with ZAP representatives twice, but eventually passed on funding the deal. With $48 million in tax incentives to spur them on, ZAP plans to build a million-square-foot factory, two-mile test track and a guest village on the campus as a partnership with Integrity Manufacturing. The factory is expected to employ 4,000 workers at full capacity.

In September, Erhlich agreed to reserve an acre of land in a Montevideo business park for a ZAP assembly facility which will put together Xebra brand, three-wheeled electric sedans and trucks, the ZAPPY3 scooter, and ZAP electric bicycles. Assembly of these vehicles in Uruguay would potentially make their distribution to other South American nations in MERCOSUR tax free. Erhlich is committed to making Montevideo the electric car capital of the world. This begs the question, if Erhlich succeeds, which one of these will he drive?
