If you’re like us and find yourself flying too much you probably feel pretty guilty about that gas-guzzling rental car you have to use at your destination.

But thanks to Enterprise Rent-a-Car, another option is now available to customers in Ontario, California: the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

Announced today, customers at the Mark Christopher Auto Center branch will be able to rent the 2011 Chevrolet Volt plug-in Hybrid on a daily or weekly tariff.

It may be among the first branches to offer plug-in vehicle rental, but certainly won’t be the last. Enterprise plans to electrify the west coast with branches everywhere from Washington to Arizona offering electric vehicle rentals in coming months.

For some time, Enterprise has shown a commitment to electric vehicles, ordering the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, 2011 Nissan LEAF and 2011 CODA sedan to add to its fleet of rental vehicles.

Enterprise aren’t alone. Hertz, its largest rival and the world’s largest car rental firm recently started offering the 2011 Smart Electric Drive, 2011 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and 2011 Nissan LEAF at its New York rental locations

Of course, it’s not just visitors from outside a city which can benefit from green rental.

As we’ve pointed out before, renting a plug-in vehicle for a day or week could provide you with the very best test-drive experience yet, as it gives you the chance to drive how you want and where you want without the interference of a sales person.

Even by-hour rental companies like ZipCar are now offering plug-in vehicles, making it much easier for you to get your hands on a test-vehicle for a while

While you’ll have to pay for the privilege, something you won’t have to do at your local car dealership, we think the result will be a much more pleasant experience and give you a more realistic view of a car you may potentially want to spend thousands of dollars on.
