Zipcar, the world's largest car club sharing operator has teamed up with the Westminster City Council in central London to offer its car sharing members environmentally friendly car choices.
The car sharing club has added 20 different hybrid vehicles and 1 full EV to its lineup of available vehicles. Some of the hybrid models include a plug-in Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight. The sole electric vehicle at the moment is the Citreon c1.
The addition of advanced technology vehicles to the car club is only the beginning. They plan to have more than 400 vehicles in the Westminster area by 2012 and intend to have 30 percent of them as hybrid models.
The Zipcar car club is similar to a rental car lot, but offers unique vehicles to its members. The members are charged for using the vehicles based on hourly or daily rates. The can change vehicles as often as they choose and have a daily mileage allowance of 60 miles. The car club experience allows drivers the chance to pilot several different vehicles without putting wear and tear on their own vehicles. Some inner city commuter that are member of the car club do not own their own vehicles and instead rely on the club for a mode of transportation.
Zipcar believes that each car club vehicle removes up to 20 privately owned vehicles from the roadway and reduces miles travelled by up to 40%. They also state that a driver can save a significant amount of money by being a part of their club.
Zipcare choose the Westminster area for the introduction of their first EV because the infrastructure is in place to support it. The area has 14 public dedicated charging points and offers 48 additional charging point in secured parking lots.
The intent is to increase hybrid and EV models available through the club as the infrastructure becomes available in more areas.
Zipcar currently has 300,000 members worldwide and over 6,500 vehicles situated in mainly urban areas and college campuses through the U.S. and areas of London.
