With all of the accusations of libel and slander going on these days in the EV world, a story about charitable giving to a community in need is refreshing. So prepare to be refreshed.
Daimler Trucks North America has donated one of its Class 7 Freightliner, diesel-electric hybrid box trucks to Forgotten Harvest, a Detroit based mobile food rescue organization. The hybrid is the first of its kind in Forgotten Harvest's 21 truck fleet and is equipped with a refrigerated cargo box donated by Johnson Refrigerated Truck Bodies of Rice Lake, Wisconsin.
Executive director of Forgotten Harvest, Susan Goodell, says the 31,000 pound behemoth will help collect an additional 850,000 pounds of food annually at a fuel savings of 30 to 40 percent over their standard diesel vehicle. Her charity takes food that would otherwise be disposed of by restaurants, grocery stores and caterers and delivers it to shelters and other social service agencies.
"It will not only improve our operating efficiency by keeping fuel costs down, it will also allow us to direct more donated dollars to distributing food in a way that protects the environment," says Goodell.
How awesomely "green" is that? Not only are they feeding the hungry with food that would have been wasted, they're delivering some of it in a hybrid truck. That warm fuzzy feeling you're experiencing is normal.
